How to calculate room area and wall footage using SizesGrid

When changing the floor, installing skirting boards or planning painting, the first question is always: how many square meters is this room? And what is the total length of the walls?

The good news is that, in simple environments, the calculation is straightforward: practically all renovation guides in Brazil use the same rule – length × width to find the area and sum of the sides to find the total length. With the SizesGrid area calculator, you can do this in seconds, without the risk of getting confused with units.

Step 1: understand the square meter calculation

For a rectangular or square-shaped bedroom, living room or kitchen, the formula is always:

Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)

Identical examples appear in flooring materials, square meter guides, and real estate manuals:

- A room 3 m wide and 4 m long has: Area = 3 × 4 = 12 m².
- A room measuring 4 m × 5 m will have: Area = 4 × 5 = 20 m².

If the room is “L” shaped or has cutouts, the guides recommend exactly the same strategy: divide it into smaller rectangles, calculate the area of each one and add everything up.

Step 2: understand the total length of the walls (linear footage)

For skirting boards, trim or handrails, what matters is the total length of the walls, in linear meters.

The logic is also simple: In a rectangular room, add up the four sides.

Ex.: 3 m × 4 m room → perimeter = 3 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 14 m of wall.

If there are doors or sections where the skirting board does not fit, you can subtract these measurements (for example, take 0.8 m off the door): a highly recommended practice in skirting guides.

In irregular environments, the procedure described by manufacturers is always: measure each section of wall in a straight line and add everything up – this total is the number of linear meters.

Step 3: Let SizesGrid do the math for you

Instead of doing everything by hand or using a cell phone calculator, you can use the “Room area calculation” tool in SizesGrid (or equivalent) as a standard step in the work.

A typical flow would be:

1. Select the Construction category and open the room/wall area calculator.
2. Enter the length and width of the room in meters.
3. SizesGrid automatically returns the area in m², using the width × length formula, in the same way as the tutorials recommend.
4. If the tool includes a perimeter option, enter the four sides; the system adds and displays the total linear footage of the walls, following exactly the logic used in baseboard calculations.

With these two numbers – area (m²) and wall length (m) – you can estimate the amount of flooring and plan skirting consistently.

Common mistakes SizesGrid helps you avoid

By centralizing the calculation in a single tool, you reduce some very common errors reported in renovation guides:

- Swap centimeters for meters (use 300 instead of 3).
- Confusing square meters with linear meters, especially when buying flooring and skirting boards.
- Forgetting to add up all sides of the room or to consider “L” shaped cuts.

With the habit of always going through SizesGrid before purchasing any material, you transform measurement into a quick, standardized and much more reliable step.
